Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that examines the diseases, inflammations, and treatments of the pulp tissue, which consists of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue located in the inner part of the tooth. This procedure, commonly known as "Root Canal Treatment," is based on cleaning the infected, non-vital, or damaged pulp tissue; shaping and disinfecting the root canals; and filling them in a sealed manner with biocompatible canal filling materials.

Thanks to modern endodontic technologies (rotary instrument systems, apex locators, and digital radiography), root canal treatment has become a comfortable procedure that prevents tooth extraction and keeps the natural tooth in the mouth.

In Which Cases Is It Preferred?

  • In severe, throbbing pain that starts on its own at night as a result of deep cavities reaching the pulp (nerve) tissue,

  • In cases where the tooth nerves lose their vitality (necrosis) due to physical trauma, impact, or fractures,

  • When inflammation, abscess, or cystic lesion formation is detected at the tip of the tooth root,

  • In the presence of excessive sensitivity to hot and cold stimuli that is prolonged and does not go away,

  • In preparing teeth with excessive tissue loss or positional irregularities before prosthetic treatment or crowns.

Clinical Advantages:

  • Saves the Natural Tooth from Extraction: Allows teeth with deep lesions that may otherwise be considered for extraction to remain in the mouth and function.

  • Relieves Severe Pain: By removing the infected pulp tissue, it immediately ends the acute inflammatory pain experienced by the patient.

  • Preserves Jawbone Structure: Prevents the spread of bacterial infection at the root tip to the jawbone, stopping bone destruction.

The success of root canal treatment depends on the degree of infection, accurate identification of root canal anatomy, an isolated working environment from saliva during the procedure (rubber dam), and the three-dimensional, complete, and airtight filling of the root canals.
