Panoramic X-ray
What is a panoramic X-ray, and how is it taken? Get detailed clinical information about digital panoramic dental X-rays, the amount of radiation, and its importance in…
Panoramic X-ray (Panoramic Radiography)
Panoramic X-ray (orthopantomogram); is a two-dimensional (2D) digital diagnostic and imaging method that enables examination of the lower and upper jawbones, all teeth, the jaw joints (TMJ), and the maxillary sinuses on a single planar image. It is one of the first and most fundamental steps in treatment planning in oral and dental health.
Thanks to this procedure, which is performed extraorally within seconds, intraosseous lesions, root tip infections, and unerupted impacted teeth that cannot be detected during a clinical examination performed by sight are identified with high resolution.
In Which Cases Is It Preferred?
In the initial examination, for a comprehensive scan of the overall oral and jaw structure,
In determining the positions of impacted or partially impacted wisdom teeth and their relationship with anatomical nerve canals,
In examining the height and overall anatomical condition of the jawbone before dental implant treatments,
In the early diagnosis of cysts, tumors, and pathological formations developing within the jawbones,
In mapping the general bone and tooth alignment before orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery operations,
In determining the level of jawbone loss (resorption) associated with gum diseases (periodontitis).
Clinical Advantages:
Holistic Field of View: By allowing the entire oral anatomy, tooth roots, and surrounding bone tissues to be seen with a single film, it offers a comprehensive diagnostic opportunity.
Low Radiation Dose: Thanks to advanced digital sensor technologies, the amount of radiation the patient is exposed to is at a minimum level compared to conventional film systems.
Fast and Comfortable: Since the scan is completed extraorally within a few seconds without placing any film apparatus inside the mouth, it is particularly comfortable for patients with a gag/nausea reflex.
The success of panoramic X-ray applications depends on the quality of digital imaging devices, correct positioning during the scan, and the complete analysis of the acquired radiographic data by a specialist dentist.
